Today we had our first workshop! We had 8 people attend, and everybody left the workshop with a shiny copper ring. We planned the workshop to last an hour and a half, but with such new students all sharing a fairly limited amount of supplies, it took an extra 15 minutes.
We had a lot of fun hosting this workshop and learned so much for future workshops. In the future, we plan to have multiple stations for cutting and measuring, instead of just one.
Also, we had some people get too much flux on their piece which made it difficult to work with. In the future, we want to figure out a more precise way to add flux to the piece, such as a paintbrush, and a way to make it a little thinner and not so pastey.
As expected, one major challenge was filing the ends of the ring so that there was no gap on the joint. Hopefully in the future we can get stronger wire cutters so that this step is a little easier.
Overall, this first workshop was super successful, and everyone had a lot of fun. We were so proud that everybody left with a ring that they made all by themselves, and everyone learned soldering techniques! We are excited to build on the skills that people learned in this workshop in future workshops, hopefully incorporating some more difficult techniques, like using thinner wire.
